Remembered
Chapter Eighteen of Forgotten
GUYS WE MADE IT!!
This is the final chapter of Forgotten!!! 🥳 (and yes, this also means that you can now get snippets of much newer, much less cringy writing *nod*)
Also, what did you guys think of the Autumn Post? Would you like more of those?
And now…. the finale.
Devon handed Keira the key. She fingered it for a moment, then thrust it violently into the lock.
It clicked shut.
She took a deep breath, staring at the door.
Devon winced. He had locked her and Nathan in that room only hours earlier.
Keira looked up, her eyes glittering with pain.
“I want to know…everything.” Her voice shook with anger.
He shoved a hand through his hair. “I-I love you, Keira. More than anything. I just want you to know that.”
“Love me?” Keira’s eyes blazed, “You locked me in that room! You almost killed me!”
Devon’s heart hammered in his chest, threatening to explode out of his ribcage. He felt faint.
Clutching the wall, he tried to slow his breathing.
“What kind of explanation do you have for this? Locking everyone’s memories in a stone? For safety? What if this island were attacked while the stone was still shattered?” Her voice was approaching a shriek, “What if we were all killed? What if we were killed and I didn’t even know who you were!”
Devon forced himself to stand up straight, but the world seemed to be spinning in circles around him.
“I’m…really…really sorry.”
Keira’s eyes didn’t shift.
“I…don’t expect you to accept me.” Devon sighed, clenching his fists against the pain in his temples, “But…I’d give anything to take my decision to create the stone back. I’d give anything if I could give you the happy life I should’ve given you.”
Devon turned his face, finding he couldn’t look into Keira’s for too long, “I’d give anything.”
There was a long silence, and Devon squeezed his eyes shut, his fists trembling.
He forced himself to turn back to Keira, “I want to show you something.”
He strode down the hallway of his fortress, his steps echoing around him hollowly.
Like his heart.
He nearly walked past the open door of his study, but he caught himself, opened the door wider, and stepped inside.
Keira stepped in behind him.
Devon walked up to the large window, where he could see most of the island below.
Keira’s grey eyes shimmered blue in the reflection of the light as she looked around, her lips parted.
Devon’s heart ached.
She leveled her gaze on him, a wry smile on her lips, “So you’ve been spying on us this whole time?”
Devon sighed, staring at the birds flying in the near distance.
“I built this fortress years ago…to prepare for…if the stone ever shattered.” Devon clenched his jaw, “But I never expected to lose myself too…”
Devon closed his eyes and tried not to think of all the lives he had endangered. He tried to be strong again. For Keira.
Light, careful footsteps tread the floor behind him. A hand closed over his shoulder.
He opened his eyes and was met with Keira’s.
“It will take me a…long time to forgive you.” Her gentle sigh beside his face, “But…”
Keira’s arms wrapped around his waist in a firm hug. Devon immediately hugged her back.
Hot tears trickled down her face and seeped through his collar.
“I’m just glad to have my father back.
“My real father.”
* * *
Warm sunlight glinted off the rooftops as the setting sun sank behind the copper-colored clouds into a sea of gold and crimson.
Nathan stopped in front of his house. The sunset painted the beams of the house, too, turning the wood to a rich rusty orange. A breeze rustled dry leaves past his feet, and a sweet, fresh scent filled the air like wildflowers, dried grass, and salty spray.
He put a hand on the carved door frame, running his fingers over the runes carved in the wood. Closing his eyes, he rested his head on the beam.
He had returned.
He had come home.
Tears pricked at the corners of his eyes. He raised himself and knocked.
The sound of feet pattered behind the door. The handle turned, and the door creaked inward.
A narrow, pale face peered out, the honey-colored hair falling from a wild bun. She stared at him. Her gray eyes widened, and a light sparkled in them, a fire rekindled.
“Nathan?” she breathed, her voice soft, like she spoke from a dream.
Nathan looked into her eyes and saw the change. He could feel the knowing in her eyes. She knew, she remembered.
“Yes.”
A smile touched his lips.
The door banged open, and she burst out and hugged him tight, squeezing him until he could not breathe.
“Nathan,” she gasped. “Nathan.” Her tears stained his shoulder. She went up on her toes and cupped his face in her hands.
“You’re back.”
Another face appeared in the door.
“Pa!” Nathan said, his voice choked and thick with tears. He tore away from his mother and ran to him, wrapping his arms around his waist.
“I came back, Pa.
I’m back.”
Nathan pulled away and looked up at his parents’ faces. The sunlight swirled around them, hinted with the spice of the sea, stained with the clear, wild freshness of light. The earth was alive.
Nothing was forgotten, for it had been remembered.
And it would remain so.
Forever.
